The Fifth Business (Scotland) Ltd - London
Senior Web Developer in the London office, I am responsible for designing, developing and delivering technical solutions to meet client objectives related to support of the Fifth Business service line. I have delivered database/programming based projects for a number of major blue-chip clients.
I designed several bespoke HR and Finance systems for The Fifth Business, including project management, timesheet, invoicing, and absence & holiday tracking systems, satisfying all aspects of the software development life cycle – requirements analysis, design, development, deployment and testing. I carried out requirements analyses and usability testing prior to the development of the systems. These systems are currently used globally by staff and management.
With extensive experience in database administration, I have developed many standalone, web-based and mobile applications using the Java language. I also have experience of consuming web services using REST.
I am providing local IT expertise in the form of systems support to our U.K. teams. I also conducted training sessions globally for 100 employees using MS Office Live meeting.

MSc, e-Commerce
I graduated from the University of Aberdeen with a distinction in MSc e-Commerce in September 2009. My dissertation topic was Flickr RecSys : Flickr Recommendation System. The project abstract:
This project investigated recommending people on Flickr.com. Flickr is a photo sharing website. The Flickr Recommender System (Flickr RecSys) is a web application that semi-automatically recommends Flickr members to each other based on their interests, behaviours on the website and their profile history. The main objective of this research project was to integrate symbolic knowledge and statistical data in doing member-matching.
The requirements of Flickr members were investigated and used to design the system. In particular the basis that members used to select their contacts was analysed. Flickr RecSys examines various methods of recommending people that employ the Graph Theory and the Term Frequency–Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF) to evaluate a new member, with the aim of finding a possibly close match between members. Based on this, three methods were designed and implemented for recommendations, namely based on the "favourite photo", "contacts of a contact", and "tag cloud similarity" features of the Flickr website. The system was evaluated by Flickr members in terms of acceptability of the recommended users."
Final dissertation report can be downloaded in here [PDF] - Sep 2009.
The Flickr RecSys was developed as a Java web-based application and uses the Microsoft SQL database. The source code along with the libraries used can be downloaded here -- entire compressed version | Source code only (Compressed – Individual classes) | Libraries only (Compressed – Individual Libraries). You may want to use the future developments section of the report (page 87) to continue further developments, in which case you will find the accompanying Javadoc useful.
As part of our workshop during MSc, our group which consists of my colleague and myself were awarded the Amazon Prize for our mobile/Java web-based application called "Smart Shopper".
The MSc course included the following subjects:
- Technologies for the World Wide Web
- Enterprise Programming
- Security and Privacy
- Mobile Computing
- E-Business Strategies
- Data Interpretation and Visualisation
BSc (Hons), Internet Information System (IIS)
I finished my BSc Honours Computing Project with First class degree in June 2008. The project abstract: [published at CSD website]
Final dissertation can be downloaded in here [PDF] - May 2008.
I conducted a research on "Who pays for Open Source Software and why?". You can find the final version of the paper in here [PDF] - May 08.
Interests:
I am an active member of photo sharing website called Flickr. I love photography and have made many great friends through this website.
I also enjoy travelling a lot with family and friends. In summer 2008 I drove somewhere around 8200 Km and visited 9 cities in Iran and took 10000+ photos. If there will be an opportunity and time to travel, I will be jumping at the chance. The places I would most love to travel are Egypt, Italy and North America.
Generally interested in new technology and like to read about the change brought about with technology.
